Irish agriculture

Ireland is a small island country situated on the north-west of the edge of Europe with a population of 4.2 million and is ‘The Land of the Horse’.

The Irish Horse Board is a co-operative society with over 12000 members and a board of 13 directors, which are inherently involved in the economic and social fabric of the Irish Sport Horse – see www.irishhorseboard.com/

The land area of Ireland is 6.9 million hectares, of which 5 million hectares are used for agriculture and forestry.  Of these 5 million hectares, 68% is devoted to pasture, silage, and hay, 9% to rough grazing, 8% to crop and 14% to forestry.  There are 135300 farm holdings in Ireland, almost all of which are family farms.  Average farm size is 32.3 hectares – for more details see www.agriculture.gov.ie and www.teagasc.ie

Horses

Ireland’s limestone rich soil and lush green pasture combined with its mild climate and the Irish people’s natural affinity with the horse make it the ideal location to raise tough, athletic young animals. This is why, despite Ireland’s small size and a population of just over four million people, Ireland consistently produces superior thoroughbred (TB) horses that go on to perform at the highest level. Ireland is the third largest producer of TB horse worldwide – for more details see www.itm.ie

The Irish Sport Horse (ISH) has enjoyed an excellent reputation as competition horses in showjumping and more recently the sport of horse trials or ‘eventing’. Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) is the new Government established agency to promote the sport horse sector in Ireland and brings the sporting, breeding and leisure sides of the industry together for the first time.

From January 1st 2008 Horse Sport Ireland will become the Governing body for Equestrian Sport in Ireland and will have responsibility for running International Show Jumping and the Eventing High Performance Programme with an input from the Show Jumping Association of Ireland (SJAI) and Eventing Ireland (EI) respectively – for more details please see www.horsesportireland.ie
