In this presentation, Dr. Cathrynne Henshall explores "Detecting Positive Equine Emotions to Assess Quality of Life in Horses." She explains that horses experience their lives subjectively and highlights the importance of modern welfare assessment. The discussion focuses on emotions and moods, particularly those with positive valence, and their connection to arousal. Dr. Henshall addresses the challenges of measuring positive states in horses and reviews the current progress in recognizing these emotions, including in ridden horses. She also discusses the use of AI in enhancing the detection and understanding of positive emotions in equine welfare research.

Dr Cath Henshall is currently a post-doctoral fellow at Charles Sturt University working with an international team on a project exploring positive emotions in Thoroughbred racehorses.  She completed a PhD investigating the effects of stress and exercise on equine cognition and welfare, applying a cognitive and affective neuroscience lens to the interpretation of equine learning behaviour and welfare.  Cath has worked in a variety of roles providing animal welfare expertise to government and industry organisations and participants in the field of participant education, animal welfare law enforcement and professional development in animal welfare assessment and management to industry officers.
