In this thought-provoking video, Professor Madeleine Campbell discusses “How We Should Think About Equine Ethics in the Era of One Health and One Welfare”. Drawing on the recent recommendations from the FEI’s Equine Ethics and Wellbeing Commission (EEWB), Campbell examines the crucial distinction between ethics and welfare in the context of equine management and sport. She explores how various national federations are responding to the EEWB's recommendations, highlighting the implications for policy and practice.
Campbell emphasises that ethical considerations extend beyond mere welfare, encompassing broader issues of justice and rights for sentient beings. By discussing the interconnected nature of human, environmental, and animal welfare, she underscores the importance of sustainable use of horses. She makes a compelling case for justifying the ethical and sustainable use of horses in sport, ensuring they can flourish and avoid suffering.
One of the specific issues Campbell addresses is the use of medications like omeprazole in equine sports. She also evaluates the current state and future prospects for the sustainability of international sport horses.
Throughout the video, Campbell provides a comprehensive overview of where we currently stand in terms of equine ethics, offering insights into how we can foster a more ethical and sustainable future for these majestic animals. Join us to understand the pressing ethical issues in the equine world and learn how we can contribute to a more compassionate and responsible approach to equine sports and welfare.
