In this video, Dr. Gemma Pearson discusses the validation of a Qualitative Behaviour Assessment (QBA) measured through quantitative behavioural tests, funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. She provides an overview of the current state of the Social License to Operate (SLO) and equine welfare. The research focuses on developing and validating novel behavioural assessment methods, ensuring they are reliable by comparing them against established behavioural tests. Key tests covered include the Human Approach Test, Activity Levels, Attention Bias Test, and Habituation Test, all aimed at better understanding and improving equine welfare.

Dr Gemma Pearson balances her role as Director of Equine Behaviour at The Horse Trust with running a referral clinic for equine behaviour at the University of Edinburgh. After working in ambulatory practice, she completed a rotating residency and an MScR on horse-veterinarian interactions. She then earned her CCAB certification and PhD with a thesis on stress in equids during veterinary care. Recognized as the first RCVS specialist in Veterinary Behavioural Medicine (Equine), Gemma supervises PhD, MSc, and undergraduate students and lectures internationally. She also created the "Don't Break Your Vet" YouTube series for the British Equine Veterinary Association. In her spare time, she competes in endurance, dressage, and eventing and is currently retraining a retired Thoroughbred.
