Dr Camie Heleski will explore how people have long interpreted horses’ facial expressions through instinct and experience, and how this understanding is now supported by a growing scientific evidence base. Camie will review key research on facial expressions, pain, and emotion in horses, and discuss what this means for assessment and welfare in practice.
Camie Heleski holds a PhD in Animal Science specialising in equine behaviour and welfare from Michigan State University, where she worked for 25 years coordinating the Horse Management programme. She is now a lecturer in Equine Science and Management at the University of Kentucky, with research interests in equine behaviour and welfare, horse–human interactions, sport horse welfare, and working equids. Camie is an Honorary Fellow and former Council member of the International Society for Equitation Science and has published widely on equine welfare and social licence to operate.
