The International Society for Equitation Science (ISES) has welcomed the publication of the COMPASS Guidelines, a new expert developed framework designed to strengthen ethical standards, animal welfare protection, and scientific rigour in behaviour modification research involving training, handling, restraint, and equipment use. The Guidelines address the specific welfare challenges of studying behaviour change, particularly in horses, by providing clear guidance on study design, welfare assessment, transparency, and ethical decision making. COMPASS aims to support researchers, ethics committees, and reviewers in producing robust, welfare focused evidence that can better inform practice, policy, and regulation across species and disciplines.
